May 15th, 2008 AmyNutt Posted in Family Concerns No Comments »

Mom is a very special person. She got us through those awkward times growing up, taught us about life, and even made sure we got better when we were sick. That is why Mother’s day is such a special day. It is a day that is designated for us to tell mom that she did a good job and that we appreciate her for everything she did for us while we were growing up and for the things that she does now. Even though a bouquet of flowers is just a small representation of how we feel about her, it lets her know that we remember everything she has done throughout the years.

But it does seem that Mother’s Day sneaks up on us quickly. We become so wrapped up in the things that are happening in our lives and then look at the calendar to see that Mother’s Day is just a day or two away. Sometimes the realization doesn’t happen until the day has arrived.

Buy flowers quick

When that special day is coming near, there are several ways in which Mother’s Day flowers can be taken care of quickly without making them look like they have been thrown together. There are actually services that can do flower delivery on the next day. These services can be found online and they can also be found in the phone book. All you have to do is describe what you want and they will put it together for you after billing a credit card. These are services that normally specialize in last minute Mother’s Day flowers. If you don’t know exactly what you want or you don’t know much about flowers in general, moms love flowers such as lilies, roses, daisies, and even orchids. The orchid is a unique flower that almost anyone can appreciate.

If you’re having difficulty deciding, think about flowers that your mom has had in the past and how well she enjoyed them. Does she like adorning her house with floral prints? Make The Kids Want To Stay Home

May 15th, 2008 BillParsons Posted in Family Concerns No Comments »

It is a challenge of every parent to get their kids to actually want to spend time at home. Most kids are on the go and they want to be anywhere but at home with their parents. The key to making them want to stay home is to make home fun.

Make your home a place where your kids are going to feel like they can relax. Make it a place where their friends will want to be.

Things to do

There are many things you can do to make your home a kid friendly place. You can start by giving the kids their own area. This could be inside or outside. You want to make the area a parent free zone. Do not rush to them constantly and bug them. They go away from home so they can get away from your nagging. That is the honest truth, so keep that in mind and let them have some freedom.

You want a space that will cater to what they like to do. It could be video games or a pool that you use as the center focus of the space. The important part is to find something they enjoy and work form there.

Things not to do

Of course, there are also some things you will not want to do. You will not want to give them so much freedom that they overrun you or destroy your home. You will have to establish some ground rules. Be flexible, but firm. Do not let the kids get away whatever they want. You still have to provide supervision and make sure activities are age appropriate. The challenge is doing so without coming across as controlling or invasive.

Tips

You can make your kids want to stay home. It really is not as hard as it may seem. You just have to find that perfect balance between fun and out of control. You have to stay in charge without seeming bossy. It can be tricky, but you can do it. The key is finding something they enjoy. You have to make your home a place where they want to be, not just where they have to be.

Your kids want freedom, but they also want to be around you. That is important. They still want their parent’s attention, so do not make yourself a stranger when they are home. You can still interact without being overly parent-like. Have fun with them. Enjoy the activities they enjoy and be fun. They will be more likely to invite you into their space and want to actually stay home.

You need to consider everything said here. This can be an amazing way to become more involved in your kids life. You will be able to bond with them in a way you would not otherwise have. You will find that when you make your home a welcoming space to your kids that you will grow and find a better relationship with them.

Have Fun With Mother’s Day Gift Ideas—Going Beyond The Card!

May 14th, 2008 RochelleKarina Posted in Family Concerns No Comments »

Every year, on the second Sunday in May, mothers across the nation sit in bed and await the “traditional” mothers day breakfast in bed. Though they’re excited, and honored, they cringe, knowing what’s coming is burned toast, cold eggs, watery coffee and soggy cereal. Trust me; it takes a mother to appreciate that type of “breakfast.” But it’s not the food that makes this the most special meal of the year. Nope, what makes it special are those little hands that helped prepare it, and the smiling face hovering above the tray.

Mother’s Day became an official holiday in 1914 when—thanks to the urging of Anna Jarvis—President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a day for honoring mothers. From the very beginning, carnations have been a traditional mothers day flower; Miss Jarvis began the tradition of wearing a white carnation, and it later developed to wearing a red carnation if your mother was still living, and a white if she had passed. Flowers for mothers day have become the modern-day version of this and mothers day flowers delivery has become a big business. And why not? As a society, we’ve become more and more widespread, and for most, it’s not like we can stop at the local flower shop, pick up a dozen reds and head over to Mom’s. Instead, we get by with a little help from our friends—the online florist!

The Internet is full of Mother’s Day trivia and humor, touching stories and fun factoids. It’s also full of mother’s day gift guides and suggestions. Over the years, I’ve been blessed enough to be buying gifts for mothers day for a variety of women and I’ve learned a few things to make it a lot easier, and more fun! Delivery isn’t just for flowers anymore, that’s for sure, and I want to make these women feel as special as they truly are.

The first thing I learned was mothers day baskets are my friend! What do you get for the woman who has everything? Or the one who has so many kids, siblings, etc. that more flowers would simply get lost in the shuffle? You turn to the handy-dandy gift basket—nothing says, “You’re special and I love you” quite like a mothers day gift basket overflowing with goodies. The best thing about baskets is there are so many choices! It’s not just all about cheese and fruit anymore. Your mothers day basket could be filled with cookies and candies, spa products, gardening tools, or just about anything you can imagine. It’s all out there; there’s something for everyone; for every taste and every budget. I truly enjoy finding just the right basket for each woman on my list; it’s fun.

My next favorite go-to gift is mothers day plants. They’re the gift that keeps on giving, long after the flowers are gone; and definitely after the meal is but a memory; the plant is still there. My mom’s garden was literally full of plants she received as gifts from us kids. And she knew just who gave her each one. Even when she was on the other side of the country, I knew I could arrange for a mothers day delivery of a special plant. With the Internet, finding the right plant, one that suits the recipient’s taste and climate, is easy and you can find everything from tropicals to succulents online.

There is always the woman who doesn’t have a green thumb, and that would be me. Seriously, I’ve got a long list of girlfriends, sisters and other women all of whom I like to give little gifts to on Mother’s Day. They’re special women in my life, and I like to say “thank you” and “I love you” to each in a personal way. Not everyone is into flowers, and not everyone likes plants. But there is one thing that every single one of the women on my mothers day gifts delivery list does enjoy—chocolate.

For the ones who would kill a plant just by touching it (like me); the ones who have wonderful husbands and children who give them flowers and other nice gifts, I turn to gifts of mothers day chocolate. Even that can be put into basket and delivered! And there’s the big bonus—combo gifts. Mixing it up with flowers, plants, chocolate and other goodies gives me all sorts of gift-giving options when it comes time to pick out a mother’s day gift for all the special ladies in my life.

Yeah, maybe I’m over the top. But I don’t think so. You see, I’m one who would be wearing a white carnation—I can’t call Mom up and say, “I love you” anymore. But there are a lot of women in my life who are still here—sisters, friends, and other special mothers—and I’m not going to miss an opportunity to show them how much I love and appreciate them. Nope. Not me. Now, pardon me, but I have to go brace myself for the breakfast that is to come.

Why Is It Important To Spend Quality Time With Kids?

May 14th, 2008 AmyNutt Posted in Family Concerns No Comments »

There is more and more talk amongst parents about spending quality time with their kids. However, some parents believe that an hour of quality time is sufficient and that nothing more needs to be done. If the hour was a productive one such as going out to eat, watching TV. together, or going to the movies, parents seem to be satisfied with that. However, quality time involves more than just an hour a day because an hour is a relatively short period of time and doesn’t allow for in depth bonding.

It is that bonding that makes spending quality time with the kids important. It is a time where the parent can show their child things, do fun activities together, and even teach their children values. When a child is not getting to spend time with their parents, they are constantly getting mixed signals regarding right and wrong. What the babysitter may consider to be right might be considered wrong by mom and dad, so the child may feel like they are constantly getting in trouble with their parents when they are all together.

However, quality time isn’t just to do things such as going to the park or going to the movies. Sure, that is a lot of fun and kids will love you for it, but quality time is comprised of so much more than impressing the kids with fun things to do. It is an unfortunate fact that some parents are so into making up the time that is lost throughout the week by doing huge fun things like going to an amusement park, that they forget about things such as school work and other important things. A dad that brags about spending quality time with his kids by taking them to Disney World one day may not know how the kids are doing in school. That is why quality time should also consist of helping the kids with their school work.

By setting aside a time in which you can be available while the kids do homework can mean so much to them. If they have a question and you can be proactive in helping them find the answer, they will feel so great when they see the answer before their eyes. It is such a great feeling to be struggling and mom and dad help find the solution rather than give the answer. This teaches problem-solving skills which are skills that parents should instill in their children.

Something else that parents should avoid is being peers instead of parents. Many parents are concerned with being their children’s best friend. Sure, that can be a great feeling when your child feels like you’re the greatest thing in the world, but it is important to maintain that parenting role even when hanging out with the kids. It keeps that degree of respect that needs to be there.

As for parents looking for a way to spend time with the kids, there are creative ways in which it can be done. First of all, write down your schedule and see if there is any way to make modifications to it. If there is, try to set aside the same times every single week in order to create a routine with the family. This is a great way to make sure no one else in the family schedules other activities during these times. If one of the children’s friends asks, “want to come over Thursday after school?” Your child can let them know they can’t because it is family night. There are many ways in which a parent can spend time with their kids. All it takes is a few modifications and some great ideas.

How To Prepare For Your First Baby

May 13th, 2008 DanielMillions Posted in Family Concerns No Comments »

Planning for your first baby is a happy and frightening event. You want your newborns bedroom and the nursery furniture to be flawless, but it is vital to think about you and your baby’s comfort and wellbeing first. It’s therefore vital to ponder the dangers a nursery can present when designing your newborns first room.

The initial thing to fit to a new nursery is a smoke detector, for just a couple of pounds (or free from your community fire prevention officer) these must have gadgets should be your first consideration. When your child begins to crawl it’s important that any spare electrical outlet is covered with a simple plastic socket protector to prevent your inquisitive baby from sticking his fingers. It’s also a good idea to locate bedroom furniture in the way to prevent your baby from finding sockets.

Your baby’s cot is the item of nursery furniture where she will spend the most time for her first months. Cots are also one of the major causes of infant harm and death so it is essential to make sure your cot follows the recommended safety standards. Your cot should be deep enough so your baby is unable to climb out. Check that the spacing between the rails is not capable of permitting the child to trap their head.Ensure that cots with lowering sides lock automatically and cannot be worked free by the child.

It’s important that used cots are checked out thoroughly for damage to fastenings and fixtures and that you buy a brand new mattress for your baby. It’s also vital to check the mattress is a snug fit and leaves no more than a 4cm gap around the outside to prevent your child from becoming trapped.

Remember to place your newborn down to sleep on her back to lower the dangers of SIDS and refrain from using cushions or overly fluffy bed clothes in the cot. When using a nightlight make sure it is placed away from the cot and any other soft furnishings

Try to place your nursery furniture in a way that prevents positioning things in front of windows. Also steer clear of positioning anything that can assist your child to stand on to peer out of a window. Window locks are a fantastic way to make certain your youngster’s windows can only be released by you. If you have to open a window to permit ventilation make sure the window is secured and never open more than 5cm, there are fastenings on the market that stop windows from being opened wide enough to allow a child to climb out.

Another item of baby furniture responsible for numerous baby injuries is the changing station. Always fasten your child firmly with the changing station’s safety straps and never leave her on the table unattended. Keep your changing gear out of baby’s reach. Babies and toddlers are instinctively inquisitive and nappy sacks or rash creams are potentially dangerous.

Rather worryingly one of the most common causes of harm in a child’s room are curtains and blinds. Avoid using long curtains or drapes that may ensnare and suffocate a small toddler and never hang blinds with lengthy cords in your baby’s nursery. If you do use blinds, be sure to fold the strings out of the way high above baby’s reach and never place nursery furniture your baby occupies, like her cot or the changing table, near the blinds.

Choose your toy storage carefully. Toy boxes should be fitted with safety hinges or lightweight fabric lids to stop fingers from being trapped. As your baby gets older, she may climb inside the toy chest, toy box and a weighty lid could trap her so it’s important they be fitted with safety hinges or lightweight lids. Drawers are also potentially dangerous and ideally should have a soft close function. Doors also pose a danger to little digits and all doors should be fitted with child safe mechanisms to stop small digits from becoming damaged

By following straight forward advice and making sure their furniture complies the appropriate standards new parents can produce safe, chic and welcoming bedrooms for children and babies for their new baby.

The Adams floor clock from Howard Miller is a classic example of the traditional design. These are perfect for couples or individuals who respect family traditions and would like to start their own.

Contemporary Designs - Instead of the usual wooden casing the design boasts of an aluminum frame supported by a heavy round base and instead of the weights and pendulum, the motion of the clock is controlled by the electromagnetic drive housed in the base. The white dials and black hour and minute hands add to the aluminum appeal of the design. The Tempo floor clock fits the gung-ho personality who dares to experiment.

Antique Brass Look - The distinguishing iron framework of the Mercer Floor clock from Howard Miller adds a touch of romance to the overall look of the dramatic charcoal finish of the face. The exposed pendulum echoes the charcoal finish and is encased by the wrought iron. How To Shop For The Perfect Baby Shower Party Gifts

May 13th, 2008 MandieKlein Posted in Family Concerns No Comments »

Shopping for baby shower party gifts can be quite challenging and tiring. Nobody wants to spend an entire afternoon shopping for a gift that will go unappreciated. If you want to score the perfect bay shower gift, read on.

Where To Shop

The first step in shopping for a baby shower party gift is to make sure you go to a store that has enough choices of what you have in mind from different categories so that you have a fair selection to choose from. Going to a store that specializes in just one item is useless because when you find that they have nothing that strikes your fancy, then you’ll have to hop to another store. And this can be pretty stressful.

When picking the store to shop from, whether it’s a large retail company or a local store, make sure that they have a variety of items for the baby and the mom. A good store to go is one that would have baby clothing, accessories, hats, shoes, blanket, and diaper bags.

Baby Shower Party Gifts For The Mom

Don’t forget that you have to keep the mother in mind when picking the gift. If you’re going to a close friend’s baby shower, make sure to pick a present that will reflect the mother’s personality and style, something that will be useful for the nursery and something that she will also enjoy.

Books and knickknacks are great baby shower party gifts for the mom. Books are always appreciated. If you know that the parents have yet to decide on a name for the child, you can get them a name book. If the mother is on the early part of her pregnancy, get her a pregnancy book that will guide her through the rest of the month.

Another great thing to get for the mom would be a specialty diaper bag. There are a lot of stylish diaper bags that are fun to carry around. When shopping for a diaper bag, choose one that converts to a backpack or a purse, so that the mom gets different carrying options. Also, don’t forget to choose a diaper bag that has lots of space and pockets inside, so that it’s easy for the mom to organize the baby stuff.

Fun things you can get for the nursery are picture frames and photo albums. These things are never left on their boxes because most people take a gazillion pictures of their baby. And what better way to keep those pictures than in cute picture frame or photo album. If you know the theme of the nursery, you can get little stuffed animals or night lights.

Baby Shower Party Gifts For the Baby

If you’re going to a baby shower for your niece, nephew, or godchild, you might want to pick something that is more reflective of your relationship with the child and the bond you want to keep with him or her.

Personalized clothing and blanket are great baby shower party gifts. You can have the child’s name embroidered onto the cloth, or a fun line like “Aunt’s Little Angel” or “God sent Godson”. If you have yet to find out the baby’s sex, opt for safer designs - that means less ribbons and flowers. Don’t worry so much about the color. Just get fun colors because babies can wear any color!

Shopping for baby shower party gifts for your best friend’s baby shower? Look for unique personalized baby gifts and baby gift sets that will be much appreciated by the mom-to-be. Visit BabyLandGifts.com today.

Benefits Of Games To The Intellectual Development Of Children

May 13th, 2008 OwenSmith Posted in Family Concerns No Comments »

When the children begin to toddle, they behave actively and scamper about, and they are unaware of tiredness in whole day. Some parents think that the games are physical activities, so they are not good for intelligence. Actually, it is not so. The children play the games joyously with scientific guide from adults, which is very helpful to intellectual development of children. Games are not only the world of children, but also the world created by them. There are five benefits of games to the intellectual development of children:

Firstly, the convivial, delightful, and vivacious atmosphere is the significant environment to cultivate the initiative, creative spirit and elaborative faculty of children. Joyful emotion of children is an important environmental factor for the formation of growth and sound psychology. The children, who are devoid of the love from parents and are always beaten and scolded by parents, lack convivial atmosphere; therefore, their intellect and health conditions are not fine. The games could build joyful mood and leave profound memory trace in Children’s mind, so they are the active means to develop the intellect of children.

Secondly, games are propitious to the formation of children’s quick response and judgment capability. The children need to make response and judgment in games; however, this kind of response and judgment is quite dramatic and lively. Unconsciously, the children cultivate quick reflection and response ability, which is very helpful to the brain growth for the children in this stage.

Thirdly, games are good for developing children’s imagination and ideation. Some visual games, such as “Hawk snatches chick”, etc, could develop children’s imagination, while the children could consider how to win and why they fail in the game.

Fourthly, the games make for cultivating the interest of physical and intellectual activities from children and inspiring their aspiration to knowledge. In childhood, they often gradually apperceive and cognize the world through some games.
